The Sorbonne-Assas International Law School Short Program is a 3-week academic program, giving the students an in-depth and concrete knowledge of international business transactions law.

This programme allows students to get familiar with International Business Law major topics and acquire a theoretical and practical understanding through lectures, case studies, group work and other exercises.

The Sorbonne-Assas International Law School Singapore campus is located in the INSEAD Business School campus, easy access and relaxed environment.

The Winter Short Programme is also an opportunity to discover the city of Singapore.

FACULTY

Malik Laazouzi

Professor of Private Law, Paris II Panthéon-Assas University

Malik Laazouzi is full-time Professor of Law. He teaches at the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas (International and European Environmental Law, Investment Arbitration and International Commercial Arbitration, Law of International Contracts, Private International Law).

Following his Master degree and his PhD in private international law and international business law at the University of La Sorbonne (Paris I), where he taught as Associate Professor, he has published extensively in his main fields of research.

In particular, he is the co-author of a book dedicated to the Law of international contracts (Droit des contrats internationaux, Sirey, 2017, 742 p.). Pr. Laazouzi is also in charge of the quarterly chronicle on the subject in a leading French law review (Revue des contrats) and he holds the yearly chronicle on “Investment Arbitration” in the Revue de l’arbitrage.

Part of his work has focused on the interaction between environmental issues and investment arbitration. He has been invited to speak in several universities in France and abroad and to participate in numerous international conferences.

Pr. Laazouzi is a member of the French Committee on Private International Law, the French Committee on arbitration, and a member of Trans Europe Experts. He is also a member of the Board of Directors, the Executive Board and the Selection Committee of the International Academy for Arbitration Law (Arbitration Academy).

He often drafts legal opinions in international arbitration proceedings under ICSID and UNCITRAL Rules but also in arbitration-related proceedings before French courts. Moreover, he often prepares expert reports in international arbitration proceedings under the Rules of the ICC, ICSID and ad hoc (including UNCITRAL).

Kevin Lee

Counsel and Adviser

Kevin Lee acts as counsel and adviser to States, corporations, international organizations and individuals in State-to-State disputes, disputes between foreign investors and States, and disputes between commercial parties.

He has appeared as counsel before a variety of international courts and tribunals from the Permanent Court of Arbitration, to the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. In his areas of specialization, he has also been engaged as Consultant to the Council of Europe, Expert to the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, and Young Amicus Curiae to the Singapore Supreme Court.

Kevin has taught international law and arbitration at the National University of Singapore, University of Naples Federico II, American University of Armenia, and Zhejiang University.

Oommen Mathew

Managing Partner of DWF, Singapore office

Oommen has acted as lead counsel in dispute work and in particular international arbitrations (both in Europe and Asia) for the last 20 years. He has been lauded for his incisive advocacy and client management skills. He has acted in a wide spectrum of disputes ranging from transport, media, energy (both oil and gas and renewables), infrastructure and corporate shareholding, and has represented sovereigns, state owned entities, multinational companies and high net worth individuals. He has also acted as sole legal advisor in national enquiries.

Oommen sits on the Strata Titles Board in Singapore, appointed by the Minister for National Development, which hears disputes involving subsidiary proprietors and management corporations in office and residential strata space. He also teaches as an adjunct lecturer in the Sorbonne- Assas University LL.M. programme and has co- authored a book on arbitration practice in Singapore and another book on court rules.

The courses offered by the program include:

THE SETTLEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT DISPUTES

Syllabus: The Legal Framework for International Investment Law; Substantive Principles of International Investment Law; The Law and Strategy of Investor-State Dispute Settlement; Investor-State Conciliation and Mediation; Investment Treaty Arbitration.
Objectives and skills targeted: How foreign investors pursue legal protection of their investments by relying on international dispute settlement mechanisms.

INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION

Syllabus: Case studies; General patterns steps in arbitration.
Objectives and skills targeted: To be familiar with the procedural steps involved in the different stages of an arbitration: from preliminary steps to award.

INTERNATIONAL AND EUROPEAN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT LAW

Syllabus: the principles governing environmental policy and international and European environmental law.
Objectives and skills targeted: acquiring sufficient command of international environmental law for its implementation in the context of international trade.

SORBONNE-ASSAS INTERNATIONAL LAW SCHOOL CAMPUS

Any participant following our Short Programme will fully enjoy all facilities of INSEAD campus: situated within Singapore’s knowledge hub, the campus has since grown and covers an area of some 20,000 square meters with 8 amphitheaters, numerous teaching rooms and discussion areas, an auditorium, full wireless Internet access, a 24-hour library and a fitness facility.

SHORT PROGRAMME COURSES INFORMATION

This course deals mainly with the academical and practical aspects of alternative dispute resolutions, and in-depth legal knowledge to international and European sustainable development law..

ELIGIBLE TO APPLY FOR THE SHORT PROGRAM COURSES

The programme is taught in English. A reasonable standard in spoken and written English is highly recommended.

CERTIFICATE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS LAW

A certificate will be issued by University Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas at the end of the programme for all the participants.

CULTURE AND NETWORKING

We shall organize a visit of Singapore; we will take you on Singapore City Gallery where you will discover the story of the nation’s planning efforts, physical transformation – past, present and future.

A visit of the Supreme Court of Singapore and a visit of one of the international organizations based in Singapore, or any institution, bank, law firm, or corporation to give you a much better understanding of the city.

PROGRAMME FEES

€4,800 – Fees include courses, documentation for courses and case studies, participation to incentive events, 4-star hotel stay during the whole period of time of the short program (15 nights).

Does not include: airfare & travel expenses in and outside Singapore, extra nights, insurance, meals and other living expenses.
