AI, IP, and Legal Responsibility:
Navigating the Future of Technology and Law
[Webinar]
Speaker’s Profile

Bryan ONG
Tutor at NUS Faculty of Law
Bryan was previously an intellectual property disputes lawyer, but now provides advice on regulatory matters with a focus on licensing, data protection, media regulations and cybersecurity.
He is a part time tutor at the National University of Singapore, Faculty of Law, teaching “Law and Technology”.
This seminar examines the intersection of AI and law, focusing on generative AI, IP issues, and legal responsibility, including key cases and Singapore’s AI governance.
This seminar explores the evolving relationship between Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) and the law, starting with an overview of the history and development of AI technologies. This will be followed by the advent of generative AI, and how it has led to novel legal questions/considerations especially in the area of Intellectual Property (“IP”) Law.
This includes, but is not limited to, the Thaler line of cases, which concerns whether an AI could be considered the inventor/owner of a patent, as well as other cases which examine the implications of AI-generated works on existing IP rights (Getty Images v Stability AI, Hermes v Rothschild)
These cases prompt an exploration of the limits and adaptability of current IP frameworks in the face of new, rapidly evolving technologies.
The seminar will also discuss Singapore’s AI Governance model (e.g. the human-in-the-loop and human-over-the-loop models) to understand how legal responsibility is assigned when AI systems make decisions with varying levels of human involvement. This section aims to clarify the legal and ethical responsibilities of individuals and companies in relation to AI systems.
