Mauritius Campus Hosts AI and School Responsibility Sessions for Rectors and Deputy Rectors of Mauritian Colleges

Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, in partnership with the United Deputy Rectors and Rectors Union, recently organised a full-day programme designed specifically for all rectors and deputy rectors of Mauritian colleges. The initiative aimed to support school leadership in navigating emerging technologies and ensuring safe, well-governed educational environments.

The first session, led by Akshay Sidaya, Visiting Lecturer on the BSc in Economics and Finance, focused on the uses of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in the education system. Participants explored practical applications of AI in teaching, learning support, assessment, administration, and digital transformation. The session encouraged reflection on how school leadership can integrate AI responsibly while safeguarding student wellbeing and data protection.

The programme continued with a round table discussion titled “Understanding Rights and Responsibilities in School Cases”, bringing together experts from key law enforcement and child protection units:

  • Woman Chief Inspector Augustin, Police Crime Prevention Unit
  • Inspector Murden, ADSU
  • Sergeant Rosenally, Cybercrime Unit
  • Sergeant Benidin, Brigade pour la Protection de la Famille

Lecturers Bhavish Chutturdharry and Danisha Sornum, visiting lecturers from the Bachelor of Laws, LL.B. (Hons) programme participated, supporting discussions on legal obligations of school leaders, student rights, and procedures in case management.

The panel addressed essential topics such as cyber-safety, incident management, legal obligations of school leaders, and the collaborative role of institutions, families, and authorities. With the increasing presence of digital tools—and especially AI—these discussions highlighted the importance of risk awareness, prevention, and clear procedures in schools.

Paris-Panthéon-Assas University expresses its heartfelt thanks to Mr Soundress Sawmynaden, Clifford Frichot – ACP, Mrs Sangeeta Varma (Representative of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources), and Mr Vikash Ramdonee, President of the United Deputy Rectors and Rectors Union, for their collaboration and support. This initiative reflects the university’s ongoing commitment to contributing to national discussions on digital innovation, AI readiness, and the protection and wellbeing of students in Mauritius.
