Journée du Droit: Assas Students Participate in Debate on Death Penalty at IFM
On Thursday, 6 November 2025, the Institut Français de Maurice hosted the 3rd Journée du Droit, with this year’s edition dedicated to the theme of the death penalty, in resonance with the panthéonisation of Robert Badinter.
The event opened with a lively debate moderated by Christophe Clanché, Attaché de coopération éducative et universitaire – Ambassade de France à Maurice, featuring three teams composed in part of students from Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, Mauritius Campus, Middlesex University Mauritius, the University of Mauritius, Lycée La Bourdonnais, and Lycée Français des Mascareignes.
Kudos to our three Bachelor of Laws, LL.B. (Hons) students for their impressive performance, demonstrating excellent preparation and skill in the debate alongside peers from other universities: Heleena Fulena (third year), Rama Valayden (second year), and Romain Fakeera (second year).
The teams were coached by Teesha Varaden, lawyer and lecturer, and Laeticia Albert, former student and Bachelor of Laws, LL.B. (Hons) tutorial coordinator. All participants received gifts from Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, presented by Emmanuelle Chevreau, Vice-President in charge of International Affairs.
Following a welcome address by Quentin Biehler, Director of the French Institute in Mauritius and Counselor for cooperation (COCAC), a panel discussion was held on the topic: “The Death Penalty in Mauritius: Human and Legal Perspectives, and Human Rights Considerations.” The panel included Vinod Boolell, LL.B. Law of Evidence lecturer, and Professor Claudia Ghica-Lemarchand, who teaches Criminal Law, contributing valuable insights to the discussion.
We warmly thank the organizers for a successful event that drew a large audience. We look forward to the next edition!
Official Visit of University Leadership
Last week was also marked by the official visit of Professor Emmanuelle Chevreau, Vice-President in charge of International Affairs, and Nathalie OLIVIER, Manager of the International Degrees & Campuses Unit, who were warmly welcomed by Professor Anthony Mergey, Dean of the Mauritius Campus, Vilakshana Succaram, Campus Manager, Sarah-Jane Laverdure, Marketing and Communication Manager of the international campuses and the entire Mauritius team. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions on the strategic development of the Mauritius Campus, explore new academic initiatives, and review upcoming projects aimed at strengthening our programmes and expanding our international presence. It was also a chance to reinforce collaborations, share experiences, and reflect on ways to enhance the student experience, research activities, and community engagement at the campus. Overall, the visit underscored the university’s commitment to its international campuses and its ongoing efforts to foster innovation, deliver quality education, and promote cross-border academic excellence.
